Our archives are at your disposal but a member of staff with access to and knowledge of the records needs to be present so before travelling PLEASE TELEPHONE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. This will ensure that the records and facilities you require will be available and you won't have a wasted journey. Our collections include: Over 3000 photographs from the 1870s to the present. Census records for Ashby and some neighbouring areas 1841- 1901 Parish Records (Baptisms, Marriages & Deaths) for Ashby and some surrounding parishes. Maps of the area from 1735. Deeds and documents relating to local properties. Newspaper and Parish Magazines Collection. Extensive local history reference library (SEE BELOW). Extensive scrapbook collection of Staunton Harold. Research collections, published articles and books. Researchers may also find help at Ashby Public Library which is found in the same building. For more information click here. The Museum has a huge archive of local material, under topics such as Agriculture, Business and Industry, Education, Health, Local Government, Military, Recreation and the Arts. Back numbers of Parish and Nonconformist magazines, maps of the town and surrounding area and plans and estate agents' brochures on properties are available for study. The Museum also has a nearly complete set of The Transactions of the Leicestershire Archaeological and History Society from the 1860s. The main archives of the Ashby Girls' Grammar School [from 1889] are stored at the Museum, as is a substantial amount of the Boys' Grammar School archive for the 20th century. The Museum also holds the Beaumont Papers relating to 19th century estate accounts for Coleorton Hall; Ashby and Netherseal Court Leet Papers; William Langley Trust Papers; The Bowyers' Company Papers; and a substantial collection of Hastings' Family Papers. All the above are available for study by visitors, whether for academic research or general interest. |
